ADRA Canada and Canadian Foodgrains Bank partner to alleviate hunger in Niger, where the Sahel Drought is threatening 6.4 million people
OSHAWA, ON – For Tanlimba, an elderly woman who can no longer work in the fields, receiving food was life-saving.
“I usually receive help from my brother and my brother’s children,” she says, “but life has completely changed – I have never seen dryness like this year.”
Her extended family’s millet harvest was so poor that they did not even bother to harvest the stalks since the grain had been eaten by pests.
“We have sold all of our animals to buy food, and that food is gone,” she says.
“We bless everyone who has brought us this help.”
Tanlimba is one of over 18 million people affected by the severe drought in the Sahel.
In Niger, ADRA Canada, in partnership with Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB), is distributing 1,200 tonnes of food. The food distribution (which began in May and runs until September) is providing a monthly allotment of staple foods for 2,050 households, or 16,400 individuals. The response is part of a massive 10,000 tonne distribution being undertaken by several CFGB agencies and partners across the Sahel in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
According to Mary, a volunteer at one of the food distributions in the south of Niger, the food is already alleviating suffering in the villages.
“Now people can prepare their fields for planting instead of spending all their time searching for food,” she says.
This month, ADRA Canada will also be distributing seeds to famers.
Much of the food was sourced from neighbouring countries like Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and quality control was done in conjunction with local governments.
